I’ve mixed up 2 quarts of 1# cut shellac (fresh dewaxed flakes, denatured alcohol) for a wash coat to control blotches in birch veneer plywood. Only needed one quart, though, as it would turn out. Can I dissolve more flakes in this shellac to increase the cut or should I start fresh? (This batch is 2 days old.) Thanks!

Absolutely. You can add more flakes as long as the shellac is good, which should be at least 6 months.

Hi Paul,
I took a look at your website and couldn't get any of the pull-down menus to work. Is there a secret I should know?
Thanks,-Jazzdogg-
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
You are correct. Much of his menue does not work.
Thanks for the heads-up!-Jazzdogg-

jd,Right now, only the menu options with the asterisk are working. The rest is on the "to do" list which seems to get longer the harder I work. ;)Each menu heading should drop down to display a list. If that's not happening then there is a problem. What browser do you use?

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of the significance of the asterisks. Have you considered adding a note to users pointing out the significance of the asterisk on your home page? Couldn't hurt.

I thought I had a note about it in the first paragraph on the home page JD. I think I should re-do the menu and only show the options that are actually available.I do appreciate your comments; it gives me a better idea of what to do (or not). Thanks,

Take Paul's advice; he's one of the really solid finishing experts around here.
One of the great things about shellac is that you can keep adjusting it -- either more alcohol or more flakes. But once the flakes are mixed with alcohol, it does have a shelf life.
If you're in doubt about a mixture that you've had around for a while, brush a little on a scrap. If it doesn't dry in a reasonable time, it's time to get rid of it.

Thanks for the info. I had a hunch I could, but just wanted to be 100%! Thanks again, to both of you.Tim
