I have an 8″ Powermatic Jointer and there are springs under the blades ? Why do some Jointers have them and other do not? Can I remove them when changing out blades?

They are useful when using a gauge to set the knives to an even height. The gauge sits on the roller and has stops that press down on the knives and all you have to do is tighten the nuts to squeeze the knives in place.
