Where can I look to find out how are the canopy bed top rails are attached to each other at the corners?
we have a new pencil post bed and the old line American company we bought if from moved to china a week after we bought the bed and now we can not get the canopy rails. . so I am making the canopy rails.
Rails in the company pictures are simple looking 1 ½ in thick maybe 1 7/8 in high plain wood, with overlapped corners, “pinned” by a dowel on the filial at each corner.
Are there any other choices of how to hold the corners together? or is that a good way

ed,
Traditionally tester or canopy frames were held at the corners just as you described, a half lap joint, pinned by the finial's stem or a pin projecting from the top of the post. Any cross members spanning the frame's long sides are usually half lapped as well, occasionally the member extending into the long rail has a dovetail shape loosely dropping into a correspondingly flared recess.

I made my own too, I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the top of the post and inserted a short piece of 1/4" brass rod. Used a half-lap joint on the pieces with a hole in them. After assembling, I marked & pulled the pin so I could cut it off flush. If you're so inclined, a small, carved pine cone or pineapple can cap the pin.
