Does anybody know of a good primer on the actual use of the paint brush to put paint on a piece of furniture?
I’m aiming for an enamel look on a set of bathroom cabinets.
I’m using Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Interior Alkyd Semi-Gloss and it’s primer. The product sheet says “don’t thin”, but the product goes on awfully thick and resists wetting the surface of the primed (and/or 1st coated) wood without a lot of back and forth. In order to improve flow, I’ve added about 10% penetrol – which helps.
And, I am using a very nice set of brushes that I purchased from Homestead.
However, good tools and paint not-with-standing, I’ve got problems getting the finish to “flow” onto the wood, sags, edge drips, and then problems smoothly cutting back into the now-drying first-rail-painted when going around a panel door, etc.
Boy does my brushing technique need help!!
The books that I’ve sought out at the library attempts to instruct me on how to spray the cabinet, but assumes that any idiot knows how to paint with a brush. Apparently this idiot does not.
Help! Any recommendations out there regarding instruction in books? DVDs? web sites?

Well, DUH! I should have searched FWW first! Too tired to think this afternoon.
I Found a good article at http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/FWNPDF/011098054.pdf
Guess I'm off to the paint store in the A.M. to find a viscosity cup.
Edited - Fact is I found 4 great articles on this site that offer help for others that are similarly challenged.
The first is Brushing on a finish by Chris A. Minick.
The 2nd is Choosing and Using Brushes by David Sorg
The 3rd is Finishing brushes by Jeff Jewitt
the 4th is All about thinning Finishes by Jeff Jewitt
These 4 articles provide a pretty good starting place for figuring out what needs to be changed to improve my brushing techniques.
If anyone expresses interest, I'll follow-up with how my project works out based on my efforts to apply what's in these 4 articles.

Well, that was very efficient. You posted a question, and then gave an excellent answer....... :)********************************************************
