If you have one of the earlier 1617 routers from Bosch (with the nice wood handles), you may have experienced a problem with the metal motor housing oxidizing and becoming a dark gray color. This condition also effects the ease of adjustment of the bit depth. Bosch will replace this housing at no charge with one that stays nice and shiny and smooth. Take or send yours to an authorized repair station. They did mine while I waited.

Thanks for the tip Vicejaws, mine did the same and I was pretty mad about it. I'l go to the service center and get mine fixed also!
I bought one of these routers a couple of years ago, and had lots of trouble with the motor sticking to the base. The Bosch people told me to get some mag polish (as in auto rims). Helped a little, but not enough to make me want to keep the router -- so I return it for a refund.
Is this kind of sticking the sort of problem you are referring to?

That's the same problem. I tried the mag polish too, which worked for a month or two. When I let the router sit in the case over the summer, without use, it looked as bad as before, and was hard to remove from the base. I believe it is some kind of magnesium alloy. The new replacement is aluminum, but I'm not sure if it is anodized. They assured me that it would not have the corrosion problem again.
Your story indicates this has been a widespread problem; but it says a lot about Bosch that they are willing to work with you.Does the new base work any better than the old?********************************************************

The newer ones are aluminum. I purchased a refurbished unit in November and it was made of aluminum. The Magnesium bases are printed so under the Bosch logo.
And you haven't any problem with this "sticking" thing?********************************************************

Not yet. I've been keeping the motor wiped with WD-40 though.
The smart thing for Bosch to do would have been to go back to the same aluminium they used for the router that preceded the 1617 -- model 1604. I have two, and have used the bejeusus out of them for 20 plus years, with nary a problem. Neither has ever even been to a service center.********************************************************
