Any recipes, techniques or reccomendations for trying to match Birch and Poplar with a somewhat natural finish. I have some shelves made out of birch plywood and I want to trim the casing with poplar.

Freddie, Some of the answer to your question may depend on what color the Birch veneer is and what color the poplar is. There is a wide range of possibilities there. One color may not always work. If you shade or tint your finish you may be able to cover better, however the finish becomes less transparent and more milky or opaque. I would try using Alder or Birch or maybe some Maple that has some color in it .
good luck dusty
Poplar can have a greenish cast to it, so you will have to look for the "whitest" poplar you can find. If this is furniture and not utility shelving I think you will be a lot happier with birch or maple edging. Poplar is very easy to work with, but in addition to the color problem, poplar is rather soft for such a vulnerable application. Nick
