I have a 6″ Powermatic jointer with the helical cutter head; I love it but I want something wider. I have been looking at the Laguna Platinum Series 12″ w/ the Shear-tec spiral cutter head and the 10″ Oliver w/ the Byrd helical cutters. Both machines are around 3k although Oliver has free shipping. I have a Laguna table saw and one of their band saws; both are great machines but I recently had a change to use an Oliver 12″ jointer and was very impressed. My question is has anyone used either of these machines and what is your opinion?
Thanks jp

Bigger jointer
I can't answer your question as posed because I don't have those machines. But - I did achieve my goal of a 'bigger jointer' by going to a combo jointer/planer. (A 12" MiniMax unit) The jointer table looks like a carrier deck! I can change from one function to the other in less than one minute.
I bought the slot mortiser attachment which I find very useful.

Caution about Oliver
I remember reading somewhere here on Knots that the currently avaiable Oliver is the same company, but not the same tools as the old iron Oliver. Do your research. Have you looked at the Grizzly machines?
I have a 12 year old 3 hp Robland XSD 12" combination jointer/planer. I bought it new from Laguna and recently installed a Byrd Tools shelix cutter head. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. I used Laguna's technical support while installing the cutter head and was impressed with the expertise. I've never had any snipe while using the planer.
My one disappointment is the fence on the jointer. It is extruded aluminum and is only attached to the end of the infeed table. That causes it to flex when a moderate amount of pressure is applied near the cutter head. It doesn't affect the accuracy of the cut, but it is annoying.
I'm convinced that carbide blades and shelix cutter heads are the way to go.

Byrd makes a great cutter head. I've got one in both my jointer andmy 12" Delta planer. Some of the imported spiral cutter heads, however, don't perform nearly as well. A friend recently upgraded his Grizzly planer to a spiral cutter head from them, and is very disappointed with the results. The head leaves ridges running the length of the board.
