I’m looking at the Laguna Quad/Tec jointers and wondering if anyone has any experience or feedback about Laguna’s Quad head system vs. a helical head. Basically the quad system uses 4 rows of staggered carbide cutters (same cutters used in helical head systems). It seems like a less expensive way to get helical head performance but I’m wondering how well it works. Any feedback?

I have the common spiral cutterhead that works perfectly, it has 40 inserts while the Laguna has 20 for the same 8 inch jointer head and they are skewed instead of straight, this appears to be a cost reduced option .
I probably used "helical head" to mean spiral cutterhead. Do you have a Laguna? And to you think the performance of the fewer cutterheads is a game changer or a deal breaker?
One would have to compare the different types of carbide inserts cutterhead in a comparative test for finish, noise and power draw. I have not done that so all I can say is that with half the inserts removing the same amount of wood, they will likely wear twice as fast. Now you pay for what you get, is that cutterhead cheaper than a helical with twice the number of inserts ? If not then I would favor the later.
I got the Quad Tech 8, because I don't have 220v circuits in my garage, and because I didn't want to deal with setting up straight knife jointer heads. The noise doesn't seem all that loud. Sameish volume as the saw stop PCs 1.75hp.
The cuts had been excellent until recently when I started getting snipe on the trailing end of my boards. I found the infeed table to be dished corner to corner. Then I looked into adjusting the beds... It seems a LOT more complicated than other jointers I've seen.
They are simply taking advantage of the popularity of helical heads-which this thing is not. Marketing hype will not account for much in actual use. I would suspect the rest of the machine is a compromise as well.
For the same money you can get a Jet wedge bed with a helical head, in my opinion a no-brainer.
