I’m building four bookcases using white oak framing. I’d chopped @ 50 1/4″ wide & 1″ deep mortises with a Delta Mortising Machine until the original bit inside the chisel broke. I still have more than 50 to chop & need a replacement bit(s). Should I get replacements from Delta, or are there superior ready to use aftermarket bits to fit in this machine? What should one expect the life of these bits to be?

I have heard good things about Fisch Mortising Bits http://www.right-tool.com/morchisbit.html

That's a deep hole for a 1/4" chisel and bit.... that aside, I have always had a good experience with Clico chisels and bits, not generally the cheapest but do represent good value in terms of performance and longevity. In the UK you can buy the bits separately

lain,
Do you have a supplier here?

I'd guess it'd be safe to say that some of the larger woodworking outlets (envy) would carry them or at least know a way to get them....Clico are the same company that produce the Clifton line of planes...that might be a start in tracking them down

Ditto on the Fisch bits. I think that Rockler or Wood craft carries them.
