I have used various non-poly varnishes mixed with BLO or tung oil and mineral spirits or turpentine for years. Most recently I was using Pratt & Lambert 38 varnish, but it has been discontinued. Are there any good quality alkyd type varnishes left? If not, if I substitute an oil based polyurethane does that give a finish that is easily repaired or re-coated like the non-poly finishes? Along the same lines, has anyone substituted poly for the P&L 38 in Roland Johnson’s finish from FWW (May 1, 2008)?
