Today I was working on a book rack project for the boys and I was struggling to clean up the edges of the side pieces. I tried the sander attachment for the drillpress but it wasn’t as clean as I hoped. Then I decided to try the planes I had recently acquired. I put to two pieces side by side in the vise and gave it a go. I started with the No 7 and then moved to the No 5.
MAN! What a difference – the finished edge was perfect. And no annoying sawdust either! Now I think I’m starting to get it.
Just needed to share.

And the happy part of it is, that it just keeps getting better!
There'll be setbacks, but Man! is it satisfying when these handtools work.
Glad for your good fortune.

Desire, discovery, self expresion; when they all come together, that's what it's all about. Congratulations on one of the great experiences! There are many more to be enjoyed.

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to cut it up and make something with it . . . what a waste!
>Desire, discovery, self expresionSounds like one of my attempts at a first date. What followed was either a slap on my face or with me getting arrested.

So, how many times did that happen roc? The arrest part, I mean.Verne

It's embarasken I shouldn't have brought it up. Didn't it look like snow to night ? What was the forecast ? Reminds me of the time I was crossing a pass in the Yukon with a team of dogs . . . just me and the woofers ! Well this great storm blows in and . . .
It's snowing now, and will be for the next several days, but changing the subject won't get you anywhere. Obfuscation is probably what led to trouble with the young ladies -- that and some other behaviors you might not want to discuss here. ;-)Verne

Surely, you aren't taking me seriously ? I mean . . . Thorald, you aren't taking me seriously ?
Sorry it took me a while to catch up with you on this. The only answer I can honestly give is, no more seriously than you're taking me, which leaves us in something of a quandry, I admit. You do understand me, don't you? I mean . . . you do, don't you?Verne

The secret to learning to use planes is to use planes.
Use them every day, even if only for five minutes, and on scrap pieces of wood. Practice setting them for the shaving you are after. Practice sharpening them and honing them. Practice on a thin edge of a board which is up against a bench dog. Soon you will be able to keep the board standing while you plane. Practice setting the iron so that you get just the right shaving, side to side and thickness. Practice getting the shaving in the middle and keeping it there.
Practice practice practice.
and while you are doing that,
Have fun.
