This curved-front dresser (14 in. deep by 26 in. wide by 48 in. tall) was built during Smith’s first year at College of the Redwoods. The dresser was designed around the natural grain curve in the madrone slabs Smith had acquired for the project. The veneered carcase, solid drawer fronts, and stand are madrone; the drawers are rock maple; and the sweater box behind the door is lined with Mexican cedar. Smith finished the dresser with a light coat of shellac and wax.
The Sonoma County Woodworkers Association recently hosted its 34th annual Artistry in Wood show at the Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif. Thirty-one woodworkers from all over California brought 57 entries including furniture, turnings, art pieces, and instruments to the monthlong, juried exhibition, visited by more than 3,000 patrons.
