Eye Candy

I came up with this concept several months back. You see, like most woodworkers, I too had been saving the small cut offs of many types of woods, some even having inlays in them and they reminded me of a bag of Allsorts licorice. They were too small to do anything with, but I kept hording them anyway, knowing something would come to mind. Thats when the candy dish idea started forming. So I made this box from a piece of figured maple and then recut the top into 9 pieces, removed the center section which created a dish for the candy. I then reglued the top with strips of bloodwood sandwiched in between the pieces of maple. I then routed out a lip on the inside perimeter of the box so the lid would set down into it and attached the lid to the sides using brass pins as hinges. I shaped the exterior with an angle grinder, and pad sanders, then finished it it up by hand sanding through varying grits. The candies on the box are both glued directly to the surface and some are mortised into it in places. The divider slides side to side and can be lifted out, the legs are larger than the interior just enough to act like a spring, keeping it in tension.A piece of candy acts as the lift knob. The interior base border is made from overlapping inlayed plugs of various colors. The handle is bloodwood with maple inlay. The finish is gloss lacquer.
