The most used tool in my shop. Hard maple with walnut drawers and shelves between the legs. I followed the article in FWW and modified to add extra storage. I made the bench wider and longer up to my available wood. The bonus is some of the nice curly maple purchased as common maple at a local lumber mill. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nice job on the workbench! Like the combination of woods & tones and especially that you've utilized the dead space normally found inside most workbenches. Also very cool how you've carved out the drawer insert for some of the tools. GREAT way to protect them from rolling around etc. Well thought out, well executed - WELL done. It's got me inspired to finally get round to the one I've been planning for too long now. Thanks for sharing.

1. Make a thick bottomed drawer and carve out the tool shapes. This is the hard way.

2. Make a suitable insert that fits in the drawer. Cut out the tool shapes with a coping saw or a scroll saw. Smooth, glue in, line with felt or leather. This is the easy way.

I love the color contrast between the maple and walnut on this bench. I'm making one similar to this. Wait. No, it's made of wood like this one, but that's about as close as mine will come to this one. At any rate I've left room underneath for drawers and your picture will be referred to often.

How in the world does one make those indents for the tools? I wanna do that!
