Omar Angel Perez has taken his woodworking to a new height with a whimsical take on high heels. Perez used exotic woods and veneers to create larger-than-life sculptures of women’s shoes–some of which are embellished with bandsaw-blade straps.
Perez’s skills aren’t completely tied to shoe sculptures. A self-taught woodworker, he has been pushing design boundaries for more than a decade (he made a box that appeared in issue #164 of Fine Woodworking), experimenting with exotic woods and veneers in all forms. And exhibit of his Stilett “O” shoes is on display at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft until October 25. For more about Perez and his work, go to www.omarangelperez.com.

In this video Michael starts work on the second box, a carved and painted Saddle lid box.
Michael begins carving the saddle lid box with his ripple pattern along the top. Then turns to his 5/30 gouge to texture the sides of the box. This isn't work…
