Pisces Bandsawn Jewelry Box
At the request of my wife’s uncle, I built this bandsawn box for his 10-year-old grandaughter.
The box is made of clear walnut cut from a single plank that was cut into pieces, laminated into a single block, and bandsawn in a “Pisces” design. The fish-shaped drawer handles are made of ebonized and polished walnut. The two drawers are lined with suede cloth. Oil finish is used throughout.
Both grandfather and granddaughter really liked the box.
Project Note: If you want to build a bandsawn box, consider making your own sanding sticks (about 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 12 ) to match the profiles needed for your project. A little shaping, some spray adhesive, and several grits of sandpaper will really help you clean up the bandsaw marks on the inside of the box. In addition to my Nicholson rasps, custom sanding sticks really helped me smooth the interior surfaces of this case before the finishing stage. FWIW, be sure to complete the sanding before you glue on the back of the case — this makes the sanding much, much easier.
