9′ X 4′ Walnut Dining Room Table
Recently finished commission. The client wanted a large table with a thick top that would have a commanding presence in their newly remodeled country home. For the top I resawed 1/4″ veneer from a premium board and laminated it in a book match pattern onto walnut boards of a lesser grade. The outer boards and the breadboard ends were selected to frame the book match figure of the center. The base is understated and inspired by traditional picnic tables. I used a shop made gel stain to give the table an aged walnut color. The top coat is 4 coats of satin lacquer.

Very nice, a commanding presence. Question- Did you also veneer the underside of the top? I've heard conflicting ideas about the necessity of doing so. Good job!
I did not veneer the underside in this case as the top is quite thick and it is attached to the top rail of the base with four large metal plates that have slotted screw hole to allow for movement. Thanks for looking.
