PA Secretary Walnut – Lower Case
The desk was made from a Black Walnut tree that fell in my community in 2011. I used the article in Fine Woodworking #154 as the basis for the build.
I built it with traditional joinery using a combination of hand tools and power tools.
The finish is equal parts of General Finishes Empire Red and Medium Brown water based dye. Top coat is 5 coats of FWW 3-2-1 finish.
After 13 months of part-time attention to this I have finally complete the lower case.
Pictures from my build can bee seen at https://plus.google.com/photos/109307351243340112203/albums/5895217892458891905?authkey=CPCi29WypsmlEg
Thanks FWW for all the tips and tricks which helped me make this.

Wow, unbelievable! Very nice! Can you share your exact recipe for the dye and finish? I love it! Very hardcore!
Finishing....
I sanded to 200
I used a spray bottle to spray distilled water to raise the grain, and when dried I lightly sanded w/ 220 again.
For the color I used equal parts General Finishes Empire Red and Medium Brown water based dye.
The 3-2-1 finish is: 3 parts Mineral Spirits, 2 parts oil based poly, 1 part boiled linseed oil
It is wiped on with T-shirt material . I find that wadding up a few pieces about the size of my hand and wrapping with another cotton t-shirt (like a Hershey kiss) works best for me.
The wadding will absorb a lot of the finish from the container, which is like "charging" the rubber for french polishing.
I applied 2 coats and on the 3rd coat I applied the 3-21-1 finish and wet sanded the finish w/ 400 grit, and the slurry will fill the pores
The last 2 coats I did not add any boiled linseed oil to the mix.
There is a FWW video on the 3-2-1 finish here... https://www.finewoodworking.com/how-to/video/easy-three-part-furniture-finish.aspx
great finish and instruction. thanks.
Well Done! Beautiful
That is beautiful work. The full Secretary is one of the pieces that I am working up to.
Jan 23, 2014 Very detailed work. I took a look at the pictures on the web any was just intrigued at the process. Great pictures also, as now that it is done you have a history of the whole process.
