Mahogany Sewing Case
Mahogany Sewing Case
This case is my own design intended to allow more tool and work-in-process storage than my spouse’s current sewing basket. The design has a bit of Asian flair in the leg proportions, the lid overhang, and front face embedded trim. The carcass size is 18 inches long by 12 inches deep by 12 inches tall, exclusive of the legs and lid. The construction uses 5/8 thick case panels joined with rabbet features. Two internal structural frames are present for rigidity and to serve as runners and kickers for the drawers. The upper bin bottom panel has allowance for cross grain growth with humidity.
The case parts, legs, and top frame are solid genuine mahogany and the top panel, case handles, and drawer handles are walnut. The drawer sides and backs are pine with Baltic birch bottom panels. I decided to join the drawer fronts with dowel pins for a different look and used hide glue for the joinery to take advantage of its open working time. The case exterior was finished with Watco oil and Minwax Satin Poly Topcoat but the upper bin interior and tray were left as unfinished mahogany to highlight its great color and hand. The drawers are largely finished with brushing lacquer. Good quality brass hinges and lid support chain were the finishing touches.
