The Cabinet Table
This project started with the purchase of an old cabinet door. I wanted to do something a bit different from most of my other projects which seem to be big, bulky pieces. So, I made a dainty end table box! It’s a mitered box with walnut keys in each corner, another first for me. All materials were reclaimed from Home Resource in Missoula, MT except for the hinges and a piece of pegboard that created extra support for the bottom of the box. The legs were milled out of an old fir fence post that seemed to have seen its last days but after some hard work revealed beautiful, tight grains underneath the weathered, painted surface. In order to have stable legs I had to build a frame that rabbetted into the bottom of the box, also reclaimed fir. I glued the legs to the inside of this frame and inserted one dowel per leg for extra strength, the only hardware being the hinges and handle. I finished the box with one thick coat of tung oil, the cabinet door was sanded down and re-stained and the legs were tung oiled first then stained.
