I have a customer who would like me to build a bookcase/cabinet out of Makore.
It’s a rather large piece and I have never worked with this wood. Two Questions:
#1 How is it to work with Makore?
#2 If I finish it with a solvent based varnish, will it look and darken like cherry?
Thank you in advance,
Bill

Bill,
I don't build so I can't personally attest to it's working properties although I've heard from friends that it works very well. It will dull your tools though due to it's mineral content so be aware. You'll also do well to keep yourself protected from the dust when sanding or sawing.
You can get some killer figure in it depending on how it's sawn.
Any wood will darken with an oil based varnish. It will also lend a warm amber tone. The best thing I can tell you is to make a sample for the client before hand and let them decide. It may cost you a few bucks for the wood, but it is very cheap insurance.
If you can post a picture when complete.
