Looking for guidance to make a cabinet out of a tree trunk (16″ diameter by 48″ high) that has had the center rotted out. Perimeter edge is about 4″ thick.
I want to keep the natural live edge as much as possible on the full outside, and cutout 2 10″x16″ doors.any suggestions?
thanks for your time.

Well, I've never tried anything like it. I guess the first question is whether or not you can lift this chunk with relative ease. If you can, then I'd cut it apart, cut out an opening for my doors, and then glue it back together. God knows whether it's gonna hold together. It depends upon so many factors like moisture content, species of wood, movement issues. It's a whole nest of questions most of them leading to this thing blowing apart. But heck give it a try and see if it works.
Now if you can't lift it, you'll have to drill holes and keyhole saw out an opening. A bunch of work. Have fun. Gary
