Hi All, I just started cutting out a Burl (about 8″ diameter) and am already thinking about finishing it.
Any recommendations?
I’m leaving some of the bark on the surface and making a jewelry “box”
Thanks,
Mark

Burls move aroud like a hootchie cootchie dancer. If it's not really really really dry don't expect it to be flat once you are finished.. If it's less than 7% moisture it can still dance a bit on you..
Please tell us more about the "hootchie cootchie dancer".
Yes yes, let's hear more about the hootchie cootchie dancer...but maybe this should be in the backroom of the cafe?

ring et al,
You are forcing me to be more selective about my verbage,,
Ahh ta heck with it! I have this issue of playboy,.......
I posted a pic of the burl at my blog - link in the footer...
It's about the diameter of a large coffee can and about half the height.
I'm not sure what kind of wood it is. I found it in the woods behind my house. It could be ash, maple, red oak, or poplar.
It does not cut or smell at all like oak...

Here are a couple different types for black cherry burl bowls that I used Watco Lacquer on. The burl figure really popped when the lacquer was applied. As others have said burls are very active. You would likely be better off to saw it into veneer.

That looks awesome, like looking into a maelstrom. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
Thanks John.
