Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about the variable speed “woodworker’s” drill presses? I know of two: Powermatic and Delta.
The variable speed appeals to me, and they’re supposed to have other woodworker-friendly features.

I have the Delta 17-968 variable speed and would not have bought anythng else. No more flipping the lid to change the belt speed.
Good luck

I bought the new Powermatic about 3 months ago. The reeves drive is a bit noisy. The unit was made in China, fit and finish is not quite as good as their equipment was when made in America. The Chuck is good - runout is less than .004. I measured it using a ground and polished rod with an indicator 4" from the chuck. The speed control is very convenient, digital readout is great. The press has an excellent laser guide, I adjusted it to within .005" tir. (it was out about 1/32 as received). The led lights are pretty good & provide illumination without shadow. I really like the extendable table - makes handling large boards pretty easy. The tilting table is stiff, but returns to dead zero with shot pin. It has a lot more power than I can ever see needing. All in all a darn good press for the money.
I was checking on these at the Rockler store just a few days ago. They must be having problems with the one Delta makes. One of their employees read to me a bulletin that was either from Rockler headquarters or from Delta. At any rate it stated that they were no longer making the current model of that drill press due to faults in the original tooling. They are in the process of retooling and won't be ready to sell the new version until either summer or fall of 09.
