Wanting to know if there is a wireless “protective” headphone out there. I like to listen to talk radio in the shop. I would like to increase my level of productivety. I often hold off going on to the next task if I’m in the middle of listening to something on the radio. I know there are wireless headphones but I have not come across any that also act as ear protection.
Thanks N.E.T.

Check Peltier (sp?) maker of headphones for shooting and related noise headsets;
Bose; active headsets, and also at Rockler Hardware called WORKTUNES about 70.00

I'm half way there. I failed to mention I'm looking for a set that has a sender so that I can hook it up to the internet. The radio reception is terrible as a result of moving around. I tried out a wireless headset and it worked well however it provided no ambient protection. There has to be something out there.
Thanks N.E.T.
Go to a Radio Shack or Computer store. Your question is only wood related in the sense of working in your shop. Clearly your question should be targeted in a different source. Peltor makes 2 way headphones. you could hook up a walkie talkie to your PC. Someone in radios and computers could probaly find a slicker solution.

Thanks for the info Rick,
I have already approached Radio Shack and everyone is with me until I mention the fact that the headphones need to protect my hearing from ambient noise--hence my decision to post in a forum of woodworkers. All I need is a wireless set up that happens to utilize cups that provide a sound barrier. I just assumed this would be much more common. I'm also hoping the cost is more inline with standard wireless sets.
Thanks

Get the peltor worktunes and find an fm modulator such as this http://www.procura.com/sf-120.html to listen to whatever source you want.Tom

The peltor worktunes is a good way to go. Hearing protection and a good radio at a reasonable price. The have a bunch of higher end offerings as well but are probably overkill for the shop.Tom

I use Peltor electronic protectors. A microphone & speaker for each ear. You hear all the ambient sound. You can hear the machines and hear the stereo and hear people talk. When the sound gets too loud, they throttle back so you only hear an acceptable low volume. Much superior to just blocking out all sound and substituting a radio. Peltors are made to protect against gunfire. They work fine for routers and planers. Not real cheap, but worth it.
Forget about the head phones. Check out this site for an in the ear monitor. I have a pair that I use all the time on airplanes and in the shop. They are comfortable and light and are great for extended time usage.
Only problem (similar to what I've seen on other solutions in this thread) is that you will need to have an alternate audio source.
Good luck!

N.E.T.,
You could do what I did: Get yourself a big, powerful boom box--one that will play CDs and tapes as well as a.m. and f.m. radio--and switch to hand tools.
