My new Veritas router table set up has me swarming through router bit websites now : )
I’m in the need for some raised panel bits around 3″+ in diameter or so..and was wondering why one would get a verticle bit for the table. It seems as though running my stock flat on the table rather than up on the fence is much more stable. Whats the deal with that?
Also I found a nice site for bits. INFINITY. Anyone ever hear of them and whats your experiance with them? I found in their “overstock” section some great deals like the edge beading bits.

I ordered on Monday morning and found the bits at my door on Wednesday….WOW!
I will say this about Lee Valley and my Veritas router table as long as I’m here……Ordered the entire system with the sled, hold downs, etc etc.$500+
When it came I went to set it up right away. I noticed the fence had no way of working on this table???????????
I called them to see how retarded I was…lol.. Turns out they sent me the wrong fence. I asked if they could send me the fence over night as I’m doing a job making crossrails and posts for cedar fences and I need them finished by tomorrow…Tuesday. They said they could only send it to me the way I paid for it to be sent. I explained it was their fault and I needed the fence NOW!
No way…bummer!!
Sooooooo…I’m using clamps with the wrong fence which is a total drag. Thats WHY I bought the system….so I DIDN’T need clamps…ugh.
Meanwhile I’ve done more than half the cedar fences already and still waiting on my Veritas fence….SOrry about the confsuing “fence’s” story…mut be something mystical about that somewhere in all of this…I also asked if it came with a router book…they said no but for $6 they’d send me one.OK…six bucks is no biggie but, WRONG, it DOES come with one…so now I have two. Whats up with them?
Thanks
andy…

Sorry to hear about your troubles with Veritas. I've heard mostly good things about them, hopefully it will turn around for you.
People use verticle bits because they weigh a little less and cut easier. This is so you can run them in a smaller 2HP or 2 1/2HP router. A standard full size panel raiser is a little too much for a smaller router. There are also some special uses for verticle bits like curves raised panels, though they can be done horizontaly as well.

You have me at a loss as to how you make curved raised panels with a vertical panel raiser safely. Please explain your procedure. Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

I never have, I use standard horizontal raiser bits, but the process is the same... just stood up. I know I have read of other special uses for a verticle raising bit, but I cant remember them now.

Bruce,
I just realized you probably think I meant arched top panels. Perhaps I should have said radiused panels.

Be careful of the tip speed of your router bit. If you run a 3" diameter bit with your router running at full speed, you are might be running it too fast. The bit could quite possibly fail, sending pieces of steel at you at a tremendous speed. Compare your router's speed with the maximum speed specified by the bit manufacturer. A quick calculation puts your bit's tip speed at something over 200 mph (assuming a 25,000 rpm router speed).
A vertical bit doesn't have this problem because of its smaller diameter. Build yourself a tall fence, wax it, and go to work. You should get good results.
I have the 3 1/4 hp plunge Freud.
Thanks...yeh I'll probably make a tall sub fence and try the verticle bits out. They're less expenseive to boot.If Blodgett says, Tipi tipi tipi it must be so!

I really recomend that you spend the extra $20 for a standard horizontal bit. They cut a lot better with less chatter. With a verticle bit you have to push the panel into the bit as it cuts straight into the piece and away from the fence. Inevetably there will be give in your force against the fance and that causes chatter. A horizontal bit swings around a larger arc and is not pushing the piece up against your hands as much as it pushing back against the feed direction and away from the fence. Again, the reason most buy a verticle bit is to give an under powered router some help. However I have heard from too many on this forum that get good results using normal horizontal bits in the same smaller routers using light cuts to think a verticle bit is usefull in that senario either.Pardon my spelling,

Yesterday I agreed with you but last night I was watching the Veritas router table video and the guy was using a verticle bit to make raised panels in the demo (by coincidence). It made me go hmmmmmm. It looked like a breeze. HE just made a much wider subfence for the panels.
I donno I donno.....I'm still thinking like you but......hmmm.
I'm most likely gonna spend the money on horizontal bits. Just hits me the right way.If Blodgett says, Tipi tipi tipi it must be so!

Hi Andy,
I've attached a simple Excel spreadsheet that shows the tip speed (in MPH) of various router bit diameters relative to router RPM.
As you can see, a variable-speed router is essential when spinning large bits.

Thank you. Just filed it.
Much appreciated!
