Can anyone explain why Taunton created “Tool Talk?”
Seems awkward and arbitrary to create a third place to discuss tools in addition to the many tool-related discussions that take place both here and at Breaktime.

I certainly can not pretend to explain anything for Taunton, but for myself I'll say "I rather like 'Tool Talk"; its focus is on tools where the other forums are more general".
Just my tuppence worth :-)
Tool Talk was designed to be a companion Forum to the annual Tool Guide. It is a place readers can go to talk about the tools featured in that publication, as well as discuss other general tool topics. It is also a place for Taunton to get reader feedback to help improve future issues of the Tool Guide.
Thanks for your response, anonymous Knots moderator.
I understand your motivations, but still find three separate places on the same website where woodworking tools are discussed kind of silly and counterproductive.

Amen! We had this discussion last year. My guess is, they don't want us ol' grumps complaining about the TG issue, so they solicit feedback in an out-of-the-way place. Problem is, newbies see "Tool Talk" and post all kinds of questions about tools that seldom get answered, 'cause we're all over here, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Hmmm - I guess some folks consider unilateral actions that don't take the needs of constituents into consideration a winning formula.-Jazzdogg-

There's an old saying "He who has the gold rules." Could be a new version: "He who has the server rules."
I'm not holding it too much against them, I just think the whole feedback thing could have been handled in the FWW section of Knots. Waste of time duplicating everything in Tool Talk. Of course, I'm still aghast at the fact that they ignored the Grizzly G0555 bandsaw in their last Tool Guide.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
jazzdog,
Have you noticed how many responses go unread in Tool Talk? And a lot of first time posts. Do you think were too intimidating over here?
I agree, seems awful redundant. I'll see about changing it when I become the ruler of the world...;o)Hi, I'm Len and I'm a Toolaholic...
Len, I think alot of first-time visitors to Taunton see Tool Talk before anything else. If you go to the Taunton home page, and look around with "new eyes" you'll see a Woodworking link. Click on that and you come to this page. There are two forum choices, something called "Knots" (?) and something called "Tool Talk"! [emph. added] Anyone who's new and wondering about tools is almost guaranteed to go to TT discussion.
Actually, if Tool Talk were an effective forum, it would please many Knotheads who complain about "the same blasted table saw question over, and over, and over again!" Maybe a few of us who enjoy or at least don't mind answering those questions should check in at TT and help with those questions, sending the posters to Knots when the question is more complicated.

Just checked in at TT -- it's pretty active over there! Way better than last year. Saw Bill Arnold was helpin' out.
