I’d like to have a chain fall, just to have one on hand when I need it. I don’t need a lot of capacity, 1 ton would probably be plenty for me. My near term use is to get a 600# lathe bed onto its stand. I’d hope to avoid junk, but I don’t need top cabin either. Seems like most of them are made in China now, so I don’t know how to seperate the wheat from the chaff. Mostly, I’d like for it not to break or jam when I’ve got something heavy up in the air.
Any thoughts?

Harbor Freight, Northern Tool for a bit better but still China made. Your local auto store...China for the cheap ones but will still be fine.
Quickstep,
I buy that kind of stuff through Fastenel, they have a good selection.
My Jointer is around 1200 pounds & 84" long, I just use a engine crane to move it around, so far it has worked well. I have used it to lift any thing that is to heavy for manpower only. It handle my Unisaw as well.
Taigert
I use an engine hoist. They can be rented cheap or bought if you really want one. I don't know about you, but I very seldom say I think I'll move this beast today. I've moved my jointer twice, once to get it off the pallet it came on and second time I moved. Good luck!
