I have noticed a tremendous amount of posts about upgrading or buying new machinery. I would like to add a couple of comments to help you guys know when the signs are right and the purchase is necessary. Please feel free to add anything else you can think of to help out in this check list.
1. Your old machines are worn out and or can’t be upgraded into todays technology.
2. To increase production capabilities without increasing your square footage in your work space
3.Reduce labor costs and generally to keep your prices down
4. Taking on complex and varied projects that are realistic for your business
5. Machines that can help or replace hard to find skilled workers, decreasing your dependence on any one person
6. Improve efficiency and or quality
7. Shorten setup times and complexity

8. When and if you hire employees you need to put safety first. You're not gonna sue yourself if you get hurt, but count on it if an employee gets hurt on an old machine without all the guards in place. You'll still get sued, but at least you'll have a defense.
