I bought a trim router the other day, handy little thing, and it had something attached to the power cord just above the ac plug. It was the size and shape of a small cigar. It was made out of plastic. Engraved in the plastic was a logo, EMTAG, and a warning “DO NOT REMOVE”
What the heck is this thing? It’s in the way when I wind up the power cord. It slides a bit on the cord so I don’t think the wires are attached inside the thing.
This probably will not be the last dumb question I ask on this forum, sorry.

Those Whacky ETs
Of course I am resisting googling EMTAG. That would be cheating right ?
Seriously though it is an

ET is just trying to learn woodworking from you.
I would take it off immediately just to see what happens.
Not that I take the paper tags off furniture and bed mattresses. We all KNOW what would happen if anyone was foolish enough to try that . Right ? But . . .
oh yah I would remove this thing.
: )
Dumb question? On the contrary, this could be one of the greatest quiries of this century. Obviously it is of great social and political import in any case.
On second thought watch these two before you remove the device. (we don't want any misunderstandings )

The other day I saw a video on buying bed mattresses and they actually said don't remove them. The reason had something to do with returning the mattress, no joke.
I did Google mtag and some said not to do that either because the motor would then give off emf enough to stop a pacemaker. One guy said he pulled it off and the next time he used his dremmel sparks shot out of his tinfoil hat.
I think it is a security tag, though how they deactivate it while it is still in the box I don't know.
I am afraid that if I take it off the Higgs Field (yes Virginia, there is a Higgs Boson) will give the tool and operator infinite weight and my Dr told me to lose some or die.
I didn't click on any of your links cause the TV news said some crazy virus or malware or mole is about to get free and I'm afraid to do anything out of the ordinary till my network admin (swmbo) tells me it is ok.
It's an anti-theft device and is deactivated by the checkout scanner. Whack it with a hammer and it will break open.
waitaminit...
I'm not clear on this ... do I wack the checkout scanner or the little plastic thing? Also with a name like hammer 1 and a slogan like "beat it to fit" I see a pattern here. When your only tool is a hammer all problems look like nails, yes?
Thank you. I'm on my way to the shop to give it a good wack.
