Hi there, I just learned to turn 1 and a half years ago when I was 15 and in that time I have ran into projects a few times that are too long for my lathe and I am now looking to either upgrade my old lathe (nova 3000) with a 20″ bed extension and DVR, or buy a second lathe. I have a limited budget of only $1000 dollars. Do you have any ideas?<!—-><!—-> <!—->

Look for a used lathe. I've seen pattern makers lathes go for good prices. Used lathes don't get the prices that saws and jointers get.
Ditto the used lathe, The lathe is a power tool that you enjoy or don't. So some good used lathes are out there "not" gathering dust and have very few hours on them. Check http://www.craigslist.com for your entire State (OOPS Prov.) Try Washington too. If you go used. Inspect completely, bearing tightness, end play of spindle and features you may want such as outboard turning, swivel head stock, live center. They may even through in some tools. I run an old Walker-Turner (about a 1938 vintage) and She just purrs right along so old can be good. Just remember that with lathes, big and heavy is a good thing.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

The Nova 3000 is a great lathe. I'd do the upgrade and stay with it.

Here's an interesting take on your situation.. Grizzly sells a 17inch swing lathe with 40 inches between centers for $875.00 Shipping will add another $89.00. You are under your budget..
Most lathes are durable low maintinace items. My experiance with Grizzly has been great many posters also compliment Grizzly.
Thank you for your help.

Jake, try posting your question on the AAW site.

They also have a 'want ads' section. Also, try visiting one of their local chapters. There are a couple in BC but they are over in Vancouver area. The Washington chapters may be more convenient.

Try to get your hands on as many lathes as you can before making the decision.
You will probably want a lathe with the same drive size so that you can share chucks and faceplates. I have a General and a Delta and they both are 1X8.
