I found this at a flea market in Switzerland a few years ago, it looked handy, and is, but I never found out what it was made for. Does anyone know?

Its a hand vice, Pedro, used for holding small items for sawing , filing, drilling and so on. Usually metalworking, but if you glue thick leather to the jaws then it can be useful for holding wooden work too small for a normal vice.
Ya I figured it was a hand vise, but I was wondering what specific use it had, I have only seen it in Switzerland.

They were made with a wooden handle for woodworkers, but its just like a screwdriver, if one is around when you need to open a tin of paint you are glad its there.
That is about it, it is handy to have, although I don't use it as much as I thought I would when I bought it.

>> Its a hand vice ...Make that hand viSe. Hand vice is something we're not allowed to discuss on Taunton forums anymore. :)Lots and lots of them on eBay, or at least there were some years ago, before I had to give up eBay in favor of food and rent. Starrett made a really fancy one that could either be hand held or clamped to a bench.
Looks like a very early version of the Vice-grip pliers to me !

Hello,
what you have there is a hand vice..... It is used exactly as the name suggests..When you are unable to use a bench vice or just need to grip something fairly small that you need to be able to turn around easily to work then this is what you use.. on I have at least one in my shop. These are still made and sold, at least here in Britain, and currently can be bought for around 6.59 GBP or approx 13 US dollars.... A handy thing to have around and virtually unbreakable. The one I use is about 40 years old......

Thanks for your reply. I have never seen one on this side of the pond. Handy tool.
