so I want to just try and make a box or bowl from scratch as in go in to the woods behind the house and cut a nice log down. What is a good wood with really extreme grain (curly, prominent, etc.) that is native to around here (just south of boston)
The next level is here…. Turning.

Maples and Cherry are not uncommon in Massachusetts and are good hardwoods for turning. When you say go "into the woods and cut a tree down" you must own the woods-especially for such a large tree. Cutting down a tree of 10 inches diameter or more is a major task that some adults do not want to try. After the tree is cut you must split it in half for turning. You could likely get a free section for the asking from a local tree service and avoid the tree felling completely.
It would be best to get in person instructions from a local woodturner. The following link is for a Cape Co area club and a local member might be able to help. It sounds as though you are lucky to be living near the Cape.
