Many shops I have known, laminate MDF, Particleboard and plywood with solvent based contact cement. It's fast and easy and no need to try to figure out clamping.
> contact cement<Yes. A commercial, custom counter maker here that I was working next door to was doing this. I was in and out every day and use of contact cement was normal practice for laminating layers.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Hadn't ever heard that use of contact cement. Keep in mind that those countertops are generally well supported on both edges and ever 24'30" along the length, and only used horizontally. Don'[t know the intended application of the original poster (OP?).
Not sure what you are saying to me exactly. I am just reporting what I saw.I took a few hunks out of the trash to use for one thing and another and the "contact cement" on them stayed tacky for years after. As I recall they sprayed it on.Some times these glue coated hunks were handy for a temporary shim/spacer because it stayed put. Some times a problem because metal sworf stuck to it on the drill press table etc.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Didn't intent to raise any issue with your post or with Howard's. Contact cement to build countertop material was simply a new method to me. Given the horizontal use and generous support, I think it would work extremely well there, and I'm surprised I hadn't seen mention of that application of contact cement before. My apologies.
Regarding the original post, there was no explanation of how he intended to use the MDF lamination. I was simply wondering out loud if contact cement would work equally well in vertical and other applications, for example a built-up door.
> Contact cement to build countertop material was simply a new method to me. Given the horizontal use<Yep . . . good question about intended use of the lam. I am the last person to ask about use of MDF. All I know is when I make a jig from it it bulges slightly when screwing into edge "grain" even pre drilled. I use a different method and euro ply now. This out fit that I worked next door to may have been playing pretty fast and loose. Their guy on the power matic 66 that was cutting up the MDF never did learn to wear eye protection even after he took a serious injury to the face by a stray chunk of metal in the mix. They had relatively big contracts in the city here. New medical building etc.Contact cement to attach the EDGE formica veneer would obviously be a disaster. Especially around a curved corner. I have seen that pop loose at a friends kitchen after a professional installation.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Can't answer the question about the venner, but I've got a router table that I laminated two pieces of 3/4" mdf together toped with formica and wrapped with oak, that I used titebond extend yellow glue that worked well and has held up perfectly. The formica was attached with contact cement sprayed on. It's been about 5 years down the road now and still looking good. All I've ever read about veneer though is to use glue designed for veneer. Makes sense to me in therory. Here's a good site on the topic of veneer glue. http://www.joewoodworker.com
