Chris, I only had a half-minute to look -- running out the door now -- but first impression was great. Love the table on the home page, love the basic look of the pages. One mystery: the three thumbnails on the right side of the page aren't loading.
I look forward to spending more time there tonight!
I know, I've had trouble with the Flickr thumbnails; the link to more photos works, but the thumbnails never show, although they did the first week. I'll be removing that link once I get everything set up on a Gallery page.
I took a brief look. Several of your tabs are not loading for me, and I have dsl, with nary a problem loading internet pages. You might have a problem, as I tried it twice with no luck!
Nice looking site, though. Nice looking table, too.
Jeff
Aside from the Flickr thumbs, which do not load, I think I got a rush of viewers when I made the announcement. I couldn't get a couple of the pics to load; but they loaded after trying again a few minutes later.
Nice site, even nicer work. Two suggestions:1. You might like to consider moving away from the black background. It looks too "mechanical".2. When a user clicks on a flickr link it would be better if the flickr page opens in a new window. It is annoying to be booted off the "host" site, especially at times when the web is slow.
The Flickr link will soon be abandoned. I am using, so far, much of what the Wordpress defaults give me; still trying to learn more customizing tricks. Not sure what you mean by mechanical. Chalk that one up to "artistic differences." : )Thanks for your input!acornhouse.wordpress.com

Chris, one other thing....what's that "Spamblocker" thing?? If it's possible to get rid of it, that's something I'd vote for. Even a fleeting thought of spam (meat or cybernetic) spoils the visit somewhat.
Ooooh, see my applause for the black background above (if you haven't already).

Hi dave,
Opening pages in a new window is a browser setting methinks. As for getting booted off the host I'm noe sure what you mean but you should be able to click on the Back button in your browser to go back to the previous page.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Opening in a new window can be a browser setting, but it is also something that can be written into the HTML code. Note that at Knots, whenever you click on an external link, it opens in a new window.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I had a different reaction to the black background -- I love it. The main heading and the picture stand out beautifully. There is a certain mechanical feel to the font for the links (Arial?) and seeing the text "Posted in Uncategorized on October 29, 2008 by acornhouseworkshop" and such. But I'm assuming that will go away as the site gets more refined.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thank goodness for divergences of opinion! I quite agree that black is excellent for showing off images but am not a fan of "black all over". Having said that, a lot of sites are like that so my opinion may not be the most popular one.
I'm no expert, but his page looks good to me. I do have trouble with certain font colors on black. Can't tell you offhand what they are, but I've certainly run across a few pages I could hardly read!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Forestgirl, a hint on improving readability: highlight the troublesome text.I'm not claiming any expertise in Web Design, I do little enough of it as it is. The OP asked for comments and I obliged. There are those misguided souls who claim that my page designs are boring. So be it.
from the black background. It looks too "mechanical".
But then you have nuts like me that 'like' it...
Fair enough. As long as we have diversity on opinion we can have fun arguing!
First of all, that's a beautiful table!
I have one suggestion, and it is just that, a suggestion, not a criticism.
Have mercy on those of us who remember President Kennedy, and consider making your fonts bigger.
I don't really care about the color, or the font, or the __________, but I am old, long of tooth and weak of eye, and while I can hire studly young grunts to lift heavy objects for me, I refuse to ask anyone to READ to me!
Thanks for all the comments so far. (forestgirl, et al)
I've made a few changes to address the comments; hopefully this will continue to get better.
Since Wordpress is a blog host, the first page is locked in as a blog, with the "posted" lines. (I originally started the site as example to my students in a class on online portfolios. Wordpress was one of the better free hosts.)
I'll be getting a link page together, so let me know if you have a site to crosslink.

Nice. Real nice.
Well, I've finally figured out how to get the blog type posts off of the first page, and onto its own page; as well as getting a few other things sorted out.
So, now, I think I can whole heartedly recommend Wordpress.com, as a cheap (free!) and fairly easy way to get a website together.
