I just bought the vise hardware from Lee Valley posted above based on FWW’s review of vises. I’m getting started on the install and noticed that the specs show the distance between the top of the bench and the top of the vise screw and guide rods to be only about 2.5″
Seems really small to me. My junky vise (the one I’m replacing) has more than 3″ of vertical clamping space.
I’m guessing the new vise will work fine as is, but just seemed odd. Wondering if other people’s vise have more or less vertical clamping space. Or any experience with this vise.
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
Dennis

The vice can either be directly mounted under the bench top or mounted on spacer blocks. Since you make the wood face jaw, it can be wider when the vice is mounted on spacer blocks, thereby giving you more depth. The face jaw can also extend to either side. You can clamp longer lengths off to the side of the jaw, out of the way of the screw and guides.
