Hello, I have a question (well actually two) for the folks here. I am building all new cabinets for the kitchen in my home with the cabinet carcass’s made out of Plywood and the cabinet faces made from Maple.
Discussion Forum
The first question is about the Plywood I am going to use. Since the inside of the cabinets will be painted and any surface that shows covered in Maple veneer I thought I would use AraucoPly that I have found at HomeDepot. The ¾” is flat and smooth with 7 plys and is so much cheaper than Baltic Birch. Does anyone have any experience with this wood in this use? I have tried to find reviews but the responses are all over the place on good and bad and most of the bad reviews I kind of question after reading the posters full comments as they seem to show lack of knowledge and skill so to speak. So I am looking for real information on cabinet use.
The second question is if it is really necessary in this application with this kind of wood to use a backing veneer on the end pieces? One end would be like 12”X30” for the upper cabinet and the lower cabinet would be 24”X34”. My intention is to use raw veneer vacuum pressed using Cold Bond glue. Will it warp in this application if I don’t veneer both sides?
Thanks for any information.
Ken

veneer and ply question
If I wasn't bagging mdf i was bagging baltic birch.Always used backer sheets for it would surely warp. Also the more plys the better.......nothing worse then finding voids showing up on your nice ....expensive project.....Dont forget the caul as well.Good luck!
I always like this materials, cuz of their flexibility.

Arauco plywood
I suggest that you check other forums on the web before using this material. Some contractors indicate that is is good for rough cabinets but has a tendency to warp. Not a good property for kitchen cabinets.

If the HD BB substitute is much cheaper than real BB it must be lower qualty. There's no free lunch.
HD ply
Ken, HD sells imported 3/4 metric ply as labled cabinet grade. It lies flat until you cut it. Then stand back and watch it move.
I honestly think the only way to safely cut this on a table saw is to have it held flat with some sort of vacume device. We wont let it in the door.
After you cut it with a cirular saw, you still will have a terrable time with dados on the router table, table saw or router and guide, fence. The fact that there are serious voids in the plys is only highlited by the veneers delaminating.
I think it should be banned. This junk may be part of the reason for so many table accidents.
HD sells ply from south america and china.
If you only veneer one side perhaps it will flatten the stuff out.....!!!!
Best of luck
