I want to paint my dining room table with something decorative to match my curtains. I don’t know what kind of paint I should use or if I should use some kind of top coat. Whatever I use has to hold up to two young boys who often spill sticky stuff as well as the cleaning products I would have to use to clean up such messes. I read that there are clear coats for acrylic I’m not sure if they’ll be durable enough. I’ve used a spray on one for a high school project of painting my nightstand. My son put my glade plugin air Freshener on it and it leaked out and ate through the topcoat and 2 layers of paint. I don’t want something like that to happen to my antique table if I put the work into making it look nice.

Paint
All finishes require care - no matter how bullet proof they are. When you say decorative - do you mean a solid color or a grained finish ?
Oil based paint in a solid color would be strong and easy to repair if the boys harmed the finish.
Milk paint is another choice that may be a better look for an antique table -
