I am confused by some finishing directions in an article by Jeff Jewitt from Fine Woodworking July/August 2003 titled “Finishing Mahogany.”
His directions are, …. “I used equal amounts of TransTint br. mahogany and reddish-brown liquid dyes, mixing 5 ml of each into 100 ml of linseed oil.”
That translates to 10ml/100ml of oil.
However, the directions on the TransTint product give a maximum of 1 oz per Qt. This converts (with some rounding) to 30ml per Qt.
Jeff’s concentration is about 3 times that recommended by Homestead Finishing Products. Is there a mistake in my calculations or interpretation of the facts and is it possible that I am dwelling on something that really makes no difference?
Thanks to all in advance
Edgar

Edgar,
It seems Jeff liked the depth of color he produced using the concentration level stated. As finishers, we always experiment.
The directions are a good guide line. Try doing an experiment for yourself. As the saying goes, there is always an exception to the rule. Also did the one ounce per quart pertain to everything or something like lacquer?
By the way, Jeff owns Homestead Finishing Products.
