I don’t have a shaper, but that will be my next big tool purchase.
I’ve often wondered if a shaper could be used for jointing the edges of boards for glue up by running the boards through flat on the table. Using either a straight bit or a spiral bit in the shaper and offset guide boards. Anyone ever had any luck doing this?

Yes, it works but your fences have to be dead flat and parallel and if you use a power feeder (which I recommend) on long boards, you often get some snipe at the end. My experience is that even with perfect fence set up, you still have what amounts to a short bed jointer which is hard to adjust for depth of cut.

Not with a shaper, but with my router table. It was my edge jointer until I got a floor model face jointer. I designed my router fence with a sliding split face. When I edge jointed, I simply inserted a piece of 1/16" formica behind the out-feed side between the face fence and sub-fence. The face of that out-feed is flush with the straight router bit. The in-feed side would hence-forth set in 1/16" and allow a 1/16" bite with the out-feed re-inforcing the removed area.
Worked for years. If the shaper has a split fence should work on that also. Jointer, router table, shaper, TS with a jig or shoot it with a jointer plane. All get you there with. They just take a different route.

Hey Sarge -
I've used the router for real long glue joints. Separate the boards by 5/8" and using a guide board, run a 3/4" bit down the gap. Perfect joints. Takes a while to get set up though. If you bobble, you have to reset the gap and run it again.

Any particular reason you just don't get a jointer? If it's money dis-regard. That's the best reason I can think of.

Well, Sarge, It's kinda like this -
When we first moved here with this 3/4 acre yard I tried mowing it with a regular push type gasoline lawnmower. After sweating out one summer, I got a John Deere riding mower. When the wife found out how much it cost, she raised a 'hissey fit'. And, she would occasionally bring that subject back before the supper table. Grrrrrr.........
Well the next summer, I was gone for 3 weeks. When I got back I noticed that 1/3 of the yard had been mowed. Seems she had got out the old mower and had given it a try.
Funny, but I never heard another word about that riding mower!!!!!!!!
You get my drift? Just gotta find the right incentive.
ps - the mowing crew is here right now. I retired the John Deere 5 years ago.
