I’ve just posted a movie (see link below), in which I demonstrate how to use a smoothing plane that I have just restored. Another movie will follow soon on the restoration process. The restored plane came from a box of old tools that were in bad condition and it turned out to be a product of the Scioto Works of New York. I know very little about this company (as I am in Scotland), apart from already having two other smoothing planes and would be delighted to hear from anyone who has more information.

burnsmall, thanks for posting the link. I am anxious to see the actual restoration process that you used.
We see hundreds of similar coffin shaped smoothers at yard sales and flea markets here in Texas. Do you have similar planes in Scotland? I do not think that the design is exclusive to America so was somewhat puzzled by the title of the post - Using an American Smoothing Plane.

Scioto Works was a brand name used by the Ohio Tool Company from 1893 to 1907. Ohio Tool Co was located near the Scioto River in Columbus Ohio. My reference books state that this name was used on 'second quality' beech wood planes. In orther words, it's a nice user, but has no great value as a collectible.
