Why would someone sell a one-year-old “runs like new” PM2000 with table-mounted router (Hitachi) for $1500? Found on Craig’s List. Not likely to be stolen. Is there a downside to these saws we need to know about?

There might be lots of reasons, I guess, but I doubt it is some general problem with PM2000's. New, these go for int he range of $2,500. If you buy when Powermatic or someone else is having a promotion, even less. So maybe this person got the saw in the $2000 range, and figures that used (and possibly used daily by a cabinet business or the like) a 25% discount is in order?
Sounds like we need the equivalent of Carfax for tablesaws, etc.
Sometimes folks let things go for way less than their actual value. A few weeks ago I found a Grizzly 10" contractor's saw for $99 on the local Craig's List that a guy said he just wanted out of his barn. (I wasn't able to dial the phone fast enough--someone else got it).
If you are close enough to go check it out, and if someone else hasn't already snatched up the bargain, see what it looks and sounds like before you make the purchase. A PM2000 is still a pretty good saw, and a great buy at that price. The attached router table and Hitachi router only serve to sweeten the deal.
Times are tough. Sometimes they need the money or are leaving the area. So a fast sale is needed.
I often see items at 50% of their original retail. I saw a 2 year oild Unisaw with a 52 inch fence going for $1000. Why? I actually called and the guy said he had it advertised at a higher price and no one called.

I just bought the same saw (30" though) brand new from Rockler for $2,200. The list price is $2,600, and they had a 15% off everything sale. So, I don't think $1,500 used is that unreasonable.
Nor do I. I heard somewhere the general rule fo thumb for pricing used stuff is 50% of the original price. I know, that some items garner more than others.Len

That sounds on par. And chances are, if its over a year old, they did get it for $2000. Those things keep going up dramatically. I can tell you I paid right at 2K when I got mine and that was last Xmas.

Why don't you ask him/her?
I just sold my Unisaw, Powermatic 15s planer and an 8" jointer. The Powermatic I ended up selling in less than 12 hours on Craigslist for more than I paid for it, but the saw and jointer I sold to a friend as a bundle (with a bunch of accessories and an outfeed table on wheels) for a heck of a deal just because I wanted to get rid of it fast.
You're not looking for a new tablesaw already, are you?

I have a feeling she won't stop until she trades her way up to a SawStop. The way she's going it won't take her much longer!

The next one will be a SawStop, unless the Unisaw blows up somehow. It remains to be seen if I'll do enough woodworking, with all this horse stuff going on, to justify a different saw, but a SawStop it will be!
Woodcraft sent out a flyer this week with a "beat the price increase" headline on the front, for the SawStop. Ohhhhh, well, can't do it now!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
That "$2,799" for a SawStop is pretty tempting, isn't it?
"That "$2,799" for a SawStop is pretty tempting, isn't it?" Well, yeah, kinda. It's a little past what jingle is in my jeans and doesn't include the fence. It'll be interesting to see how much the price goes up. The price of stell has skyrocketed in the last couple of years.
An unusual bill for "discretionary spending" is coming up soon -- going to the Dressage World Cup in Las Vegas in April, so have to save up for hotel and eats -- tickets are paid for (ouch). Five days (or whatever) will cost me a fortune just in meals.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FW, I'm with you on the SawStop! It is very high on my "want list," but a low priority on the reality checklist.
I'm not sure where you are going for your show, but many cities offer a "taste of" special in their local restaurants which gives you a reasonable portion at a less than the usual price. Check it out on the 'net for your location.

Nope! If we weren't buried in work here at home, though, I'd grab that saw in a minute! and sell my Unisaw. Not that I don't like the Unisaw, but the PM2000 seems a cut above ('scuze the pun).
I cruise Craig's List 2 or 3x/day in case a good deal comes up. That's how I found the Unisaw, a couple hours after it was listed, was at his door in 30 minutes and closed the deal. We also got a generator big enough to run the whole house, including the well pump, at an excellent price, again caught the ad less than an hour after it was listed.
What's an "electromagnetic drill press"?? Saw this Milwaukee the other night.

It's a drill press with a magnetic base, say you are ten floors up on a steel girder building under contruction and need an 1 1/2" hole drilled in the girder. Set it in place, hit the switch for the magnet and Bob's your uncle.
Edit: Not a very attractive deal since Amazon is offering it for $1099 brand new!

They are used to let you have the accuracy of the drill press in a portable format. We make some large welded assemblies at work, and use the magnetic drill press to drill holes for mounting walls to floors, and attach mechanical drives and motor mounts to the walls.
I also brought one home to drill a few extra holes in my table saw, to allow me to mount the zero clearance inserts at the four corners, and have four jacking screws below the insert to level it up with. I'm also thinking about drilling two holes in the left wing to attach a riser that goes up to the loose end of my Beisemeyer gaurd system. I know I would have to take it off to rip sheet goods, but for general cuts, it wouldn't be in the way. and with four bolts holding it, removal could be done fairly quickly.
hey with that electromagnetic drill press you will be set for your next heist involving a safe... just like in the movies.
or maybe it could be used to drill out the bolts holding the Sawstop to the floor...Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com

You inspired me with all your Craiglist purchases... I've been keeping an eye on it for about a month now, lots of great stuff. Last night I went and picked up a 2 year old Oneida Cyclone for less than half of the cost of new, and of course no shipping. The guy was a hobbyiest and only did woodworking during the winter months so it's in great shape. The guy threw in all his dust collection pipe and fittings as well!
He also had a planer for sale, I was tempted...
Buying used like this is a really good way to outfit a shop. It seems I'm slowly upgrading equipment I bought new with used equipment and it's costing me half as much as I paid in the first place!
Buster
Congrats, Buster! Yep, I've seen some really good deals on dust collectors. I aleady have what fits in my shop, but someday I might consider a cyclone if a good deal comes up on CL. 8" and 12" jointers also show up fairly often.
Much better than eBay as you can check the machine out and (as in your case) get a feel for the environment it was used in.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I bought one of these at a garage sale for thirty bucks. It was Sunday and everyone passed over it. It wouldn't come on. My friend gave me four hundred, as is. That meant he save about eight hundred on it. It cost him about a hundred to repair it. You can put it on the underside of a steel beam on a skyscraper, hit the magnet switch and drill up. Or you can set it out on a sheet of iron and hold it in place while you drill. Mine was another brand purported to be the inventor of the mag drills and used hollow core bits.
My guess would be that somebody needs $1,500 and they need it in a hurry.
