Used Laguna Bandsaw or new Grizzly?
Would it be better to buy a used Laguna LT16 2004 model or a new Grizzly 14″ bandsaw of the same horsepower? I found an older tool review of the LT16 and it looks good, but the saw was underpowered compared to the newest models.
Thanks for the feedback

I guess it depends, somewhat, on which model Grizzly we're talking about. All things being equal, though, the Laguna is a much better saw. I have the LT-16HD and absolutely love it -- favorite machine I have in my shop.
Is it a 2004 model? I've read something in the archives about various manufacturers for the LT16 at different times, so need some help here.
The Grizzly 50555X extreme saw 14" also has a 1.5 hp motor and resaw fence, but I was also looking at the 1 hp Grizzly that is the same type.
This used Laguna has roller bearing guides and doesn't have a good resaw fence but it is in great shape.
Well, mine isn't the LT-16, it's the next step up -- the LT-16HD. Laguna changed manufacturers around 2003/2004. That really isn't an issue because the saws are built to Laguna's specs -- they're not simply re-branded machines. My personal opinion is that the Laguna you're considering is a much better saw than the Grizzly. It's a steel frame saw which is much stiffer than cast iron and will handle the higher tension needed for resawing. Plus, it will accept a wider blade. You can always add a resaw fence and ceramic guides to the Laguna if you'd like. I'm not saying that the Grizzly isn't a good saw, or that you won't be happy with it, but the Laguna is the better saw, imo.
Will it also work well with the smaller blades like 1/4" or 3/8"? It would be my only saw so I would need it to do that as well, and I have mostly read about the resaw power of the Laguna.
Yes. The current spec is 1/16 to 1 inch.http://www.lagunatools.com/bandsaw.lt16.htmContact Laguna for an owners manual if the seller does not still have his. Also ask Laguna what has changed on the saw design since it was manufactured. This will give you a heads up on what may need to be upgraded.Greg

The LT-16 (the saw you are considering) will take blades 1/16" to 1". Here's a link to the LT-16 info on the Laguna site. Specs are pretty much the same but the guides are different.
