I own a Wood Lathe Model: JWL-1442VS from JET.
I will like to install a new motor with variable speed.
Does anyone knows if it can be done?
I called JET they are no help. I did try to buy a new head and tail set from JET, but they are not reasonable at all!!!
I do not know much about electrical motors.
Thanks for you help!

It sounds like you want electronic variable speed on your lathe, instead of the variable speed pullies you've got. What you need is a 3 phase motor, say 1.5hp and a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) which will allow you to run the motor off of your single phase power, plus will give you variable speed. The VFD is the grey box you see on the back of the headsock on the Jet 1642 lathe.
You can pick up 3 phase motors as surplus on Craigslist or ebay pretty cheaply. You ideally want an "inverter duty" motor which can be run at low speeds without overheating. You want to make sure you find one with the same motor mounting pattern as your old one.
The VFD can be ordered online for around $150. Just google it and you'll find several sources.
