All,
I’m making the Shaker clock that was featured in FWW by Chris Becksvoort back in Aug. 2002 (#157). I misinterrupted the bullnosed molding measurments that is attached to the divider between the lower and upper door. The bullnosed molding is yellow glued (and dadoed) to the divider. I need to remove the bullnose molding and replace it with the appropriate size. Is there an easy way to break the glue seal?
A little background: The plans called for a 3/4×1/2″ bullnose. Because the doors are 1/2″ thick I assumed the 3/4 measurment attached to the divider and the bullnose protruded a 1/2″…wrong. It looks funny now and I thought about rounding over the door frame…but it will bother me forever if I don’t back up and do it the right way. Thanks

Try steaming it witha steam iron. I've had success with this in the past. I've also used a hot damp rag and pressed the back with an iron.
After you get it off let it dry and sand.
Hope this helps.
Len,
Sounds like I need to slip past my bride, Hawkeye, with the steam iron and have at it. thanks
Len is right. Gentle heat, and moisture won't hurt either.
Unless you're the lead dog, the view just never changes.
Yesmaam,
A stong steady hand with patients should do it..oh, I'm so screwed...lol
If you can get some hot water (not boiling, but very hot) into the dado you should be able to break the glue bond slowly while working at it with a metal spatula or chisel. If you can get it open on one end, you might try using one of those syringe type glue applicators to inject more water down into the dado. The problem is trying to gently lever it out without crushing fibers and doing damage to the wood.
Worst case scenario - cut it off with a hand saw, then recut the dado through what's left in the channel and start over.
If you build it - he will come.
douglas2cats,
I'm going to try the hot water that you, len and yesam suggest...but have my chisel handy to hack out the molding. If at all possible I'd like to save the divider from being spoiled. thanks
Good morning!
vinegar will dissolve most yellow and white glues.
get a syringe type of glue bottle. and insert on and into the glue joint. the vinegar will dissolve the glue with in just a few min. just work it gently and your molding should come off easily with one to two applications.
Good luck !

Curtis,
I went down to the shop this morning ready for bear...steam iron, hot water, rice vinegar. Chopped a corner out to see if I could get the fluids into the dado...damn, I fit that molding well. Grabbed the #5 and flattened the molding in abut 2 mins...make new molding and glued up..done.
Thank you all.
