hi everyone.
I’m doing some home renovation and I plan on fixing up some old double hung wood windows. I want to build some new windows and replace some rotten sills.
What is my best choice of wood for the window frame. We live in Toronto Ontario and the windows will most likely be painted.
thanks

You should have no problem finding Douglas fir in your area, that would be my first choice.

P.S. May as well go for quartersawn.

You might look at Cedar for the sills, here in the San Francisco bay area the sills older house's are often redwood with the sashes and frames out of pine or fir.

philmm,
decay resistant woods like white oak or black walnut will be the most durable. for examples of balck walnut window frames go to 34866.5
If you buy from a small mom and pop sawmill chances are you will be able to buy white oak for around a dollar a bd.ft. The further away from the sawmill you buy the higher the prices due to more middlemen getting their hands in. Big box stores like Home Depot etc.. will tend to have the highest per board costs for such wood.. (or hobby shops)
