In one of the magazines I receive I read an article on turning swirls in wood and how to glue up the different wood so it would turn out in a swirl pattern. However I’m unable to find the article or remember how to prepare the “glue up.” Does anyone remember the article or know how to do the glue up?

Bruce, By "swirls", do you mean chatterwork?
I don't know what chatterwork is. What I'm talking about is the way you glue up boards so that when you turn them into a spindle they come out like a "barbers pole."

Bruce, Wish I could help you; maybe someone else will be able to. I will keep an eye on this thread, might can learn something also. Gary
Spiral sounds like the term. I think the confusion is in the technique and the tool versus the glue up idea.

I think the original question is in reference to segmented spiral turning. That is, the spiral is in the pattern of segments of constrasting wood, rather than a physical helix. There are some photos of simple segmented turnings of this kind here: http://www.segmentedturning.com/userwork.htm
I've seen other, more sophisticated ones, which is what I think the original poster is talking about, but I haven't been able to locate any photos.

I thought of the segmented gluing but many times rookies are so off base in their terminology...
Rick,
On a subsequent post the OP mentioned the look of a barber pole.
Here's some interesting stock: http://clearcreeklumber.com/pbSpalt.html May not be what he's talking about though.
