So, here’s my deal – I just got my first lathe, I need a cheap but fun gift for a white elephant auction my family does at Christmas and I’m snowed in. I’ve never turned a thing, ever and I thought a YoYo might be a place to start. Can anyone offer a play-by-play on how to get started?

I think a yoyo that works well (as opposed to just being yoyo shaped is a somewhat advanced project. Tops are pretty easy. So are candle sticks and honey dippers. A mallet (for carving or use in the kitchen) is not hard. YOu could also make a small plate or bowl.
