Thanks for all the helpful ideas. I think I’ll contact Behlen and see what they have to say and, if they have no great solution, then I’m going to try soaking them in paint thinner as per one of your suggestions and see what happens. Wish the baskets were little ones! I’ll let you know the results in a couple weeks when I get to it.

Please don't soak baskets in liquid. You need to just get after them with a brush and a lot of mineral oil, but DO not SOAK or even dip. I collect baskets. You can wash them with water and let them dry--mine have no finish on them--and that is fine. If you soak them you will risk softening whatever it is and REALLY gumming up the works.
I, of course, cannot see these, and could be wrong. But think long and hard before you do that.
