Hello, my router started to make short circuit. As soon as I turn it on it makes a short circuit. There is no assistance here in Rome for Bosch. So, what would you do in this instance? Try to fix it yourself? Or look for some technical assistance somehow?
Thanks Enrico

Might be as simple as a frayed cord. If it is not too daunting ,open up the housing and look for loose wire connections.
You might ask a fellow woodworker or shop owner where they get small electrical tools repaired. Maybe even a google search with Rome/Italy small tool repair as the search.I thought Bosch was a German company, might try emailing them.

Did you notice if the short was in the power cord or in the switch maybe? My Porter-Cable router stuttered about a month ago. I wiggled the toggle power switch and found there was a short in it. Found and exact replacement at a hardware store. I don't know what kind of resources you have there, but something like a switch or power cord could be available locally. If not, I guess ebay or Bosch website would be my next move after I figure out where the short is.

Do you mean the circuit breaker tripped when you turned the router on? Does the router run, stop then run intermittently? Is there smoke? Does the cord get hot?
Does the problem come and go if you wiggle the cord, tap the switch?
No, it means that as soon as I operate it, all the electricity in my house goes off. Sorry, I don't know the technical terms. I hope this is clear.
There are a dozen reasons why this would happen, it could be a fault of the tool or a fault with the house wiring. A few questions to help diagnose the cause: When the power goes off what do you have to do to get it back on?Does the entire house lose power or just one room or one series of outlets?John White

Well, I don't know if electic circuit is the same all over the world but there is a place with a button the turns the electricity on or off. The button goes off and I have to turn it on again. This usually happens when there is a short circuit in the house. It is called save life because if you happen to get an electrical shock it disconnects right away.
Anyway today I found a place where maybe they will fix the router.
Thanks anybody, Enrico
Enrico,From your description of the safety device cutting off the power, it is possibly what is called a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in the US, but it could be an ordinary circuit breaker. Does the device have a test button on it? Is it part of the wall socket or is it in a panel that serves the whole house? It is possible that the fault is in the house wiring, not in the router, in which case you would be wasting your money on having the machine serviced.John White

Enrico,If the "salvavita" is tripping then the short is to earth (ground in the US). If you did not have one then you would get a shock from the router.A competent electrician should be able to trace the fault and advise you whether it is repairable. The fault could be as trivial as slightly damp sawdust causing the fault or as serious as a damaged motor winding.
Thanks for trying to help. It was really difficult. Like I said, for some crazy reason Bosch got rid of all the assistance in Rome. There used to be 2 shops for assistance. Yestarday I spent the whole afternoon stuck in the crazy traffic of Rome trying to find someone who would fix the router. One more try today and I think I will give up and ship it to another city.
Thanks Enrico
The circuit breaker did not trip, but the router ran intermittently. The cord did not get hot either. I just narrowed it down to the switch. In my case I wiggled the toggle switch and the router kind of stuttered. Like it wanted to start, but had a internal open connection. You could try that with your switch and your cord also. Might also mention that I own a fairly new Bosch sliding miter saw in which the switch malfunctioned after only about 2 hours. I like Bosch equipment, but I suppose all manufacturers cut corners somewhere, IMHO.
Sounds as though too much current is being drawn -caused by a short.
The answer to your question depends on your knowledge or experience, so if this sort of thing is not familiar to you I suggest you look for obvious causes such as frayed cord and insulation, loose terminals, dirt in the switch etc. Check the plug first, and the cord then the switch itself-which could be dusty or have a loose connection. After that it needs attention from someone with suitable knowledge and testing equipment, as it could something worse such as a break down in the windings or the brushes being worn out. I assume your plugs there are not fitted with fuses.Philip Marcou

Could you try to describe what happens better?
A broken spring behind one of the brushes can cause poor contact with lots of arcing where the brush contacts the commutator. Even a little dust can cause the brush to get stuck and loose contact.
If can look into the intake and see sparks coming from one brush, this would indicate the problem. If the sparks come from both, the problem is probably with the armature.
Hello, thanks to everybody for trying to help. The problem here is due to both my english far from perfection and to technical terms referring to electricity. Also the electric circuit might be different in different parts of the world. Anyway, after trying to fix it myself (no success) and wasting a lot of time going around looking for some technical assistance, I finally had it fixed by some professionals. It was not cheap unfortuantely. That's why I wanted to fix it myself. It took them a short time to fix it, and this makes me think that it was really an easy task. Anyway, the router is working now. Again thanks to everybody for your assistance, but I did not have other choice than ask a professional,
Enrico
So satisy my curiosity and tell me what was wrong. If you think it was expensive to fix, maybe so, but it was still cheaper than college!
Two days late, but happy birthday to you. K
